Where we work

For over 30 years, CARE Tanzania has worked alongside communities across nearly every corner of the country; from the islands of Zanzibar to the shores of Lake Tanganyika, from the foothills of Kilimanjaro to the highlands of Njombe. Today, we are active in 8 regions, with plans to reach further.

Our National Footprint

Since 1994, CARE Tanzania has had a presence in more than 25 of Tanzania’s 31 regions, making us one of the most geographically experienced international NGOs in the country. We work across both mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar, partnering with the Government of Tanzania, INGOs, local civil society organizations, and communities to deliver lasting change.

Today, we operate active programs in 8 regions, are planning expansion into new regions, and carry a deep legacy of completed projects across many more. Our footprint reflects three decades of intentional, evidence-driven, partnership-led work going where vulnerability is deepest and where local partnerships can drive sustainable transformation.

Where We Work Today

🌴 Zanzibar (Unguja & Pemba)

Across both islands, CARE Tanzania works with young women, adolescent girls, and coastal communities, supporting innovation, economic empowerment, and resilience in one of Tanzania’s most distinct cultural and economic landscapes.

🌿 Iringa

In the southern highlands of Iringa, CARE works with smallholder farmers, especially women, supporting sustainable agriculture and climate-smart practices, advocating for unpaid care, and promoting women’s economic independence.

⛰️ Mbeya (Rungwe & Busokelo Districts)

In the fertile highlands of Mbeya, CARE supports smallholder tea farmers, particularly women, strengthening their economic independence and improving farm productivity in one of Tanzania’s most important cash-crop sub-sectors.

🌿 Njombe

The southern highlands region of Njombe is a key hub for CARE Tanzania’s work in women’s economic independence, sustainable agriculture, and climate resilience.

🌾 Morogoro

A region of significant agricultural importance, Morogoro is where CARE supports communities at the intersection of food security, climate stress, and economic opportunity, hence building resilience for both farmers and pastoralists.

🌊 Tanga (Korogwe, Bumbuli, Muheza & Mkinga Districts)

Along Tanzania’s northeastern coast, CARE works with women farmers and coastal communities in strengthening livelihoods and advancing equality for women and girls.

🌽 Shinyanga (Kishapu District)

In the central-north, CARE Tanzania works in Kishapu, one of the country’s drier districts—on programming that helps families withstand climate shocks while improving food and nutrition security.

🌍 Kigoma

In western Tanzania along Lake Tanganyika, CARE supports communities in one of the country’s most underserved regions by bringing programming focused on women’s empowerment, livelihoods, and resilience.

Our Legacy Across Tanzania

While our current operations span 8 regions, CARE Tanzania’s footprint over the past 30 years extends far beyond. Since 1994, we have implemented projects in regions across the country; from the refugee response in Kagera that marked our beginning to long-term development work in Kilimanjaro, Arusha, Manyara, Dodoma, Singida, Tabora, Mara, Mwanza, Simiyu, Lindi, Mtwara, Pwani, Ruvuma, Kagera, and beyond.

Across these regions, our completed projects have left behind something that endures:

  • Stronger local organizations equipped to continue the work
  • Trained government extension officers and community health workers
  • Functioning Village Savings and Loan Associations still meeting today
  • Empowered women and girls continuing to lead change in their communities
