Strengthening Women’s Movement

The Strengthening Women’s Movement Building Project supports local women’s rights organizations, youth-led organizations, and organizations representing people with disabilities in Kigoma Region to strengthen their collective voice and influence on issues affecting women and girls.

Women and girls in Kigoma continue to face challenges that affect their rights, opportunities, and participation in decision-making. These include violence against women and girls, child marriage, teenage pregnancy, limited access to sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR), barriers to girls’ education, and limited opportunities for economic empowerment.

Local women’s rights organizations and other community-based organizations have an important role in addressing these challenges. However, they need continued opportunities to strengthen their skills, build relationships, generate evidence, and engage with decision-makers.

The project responds to this need by strengthening the women’s movement in Kigoma and supporting local organizations to work together around issues that matter to women, girls, youth, and people with disabilities. The project brings together 20 local organizations to build their capacity, strengthen relationships, and work together to advocate for equality and rights of women and girls. It creates space for local organizations to share experiences, learn from each other, and raise their voices on issues affecting their communities.

What the Project Does

The project works with local organizations to strengthen their capacity, build collective action, support evidence-based advocacy, and promote equality for women and girls. These interconnected areas help local organizations engage with decision-makers and advance the rights of women and girls.

  1. Strengthening the Capacity of Local Organizations

The project supports 20 local organizations through capacity strengthening in:

    • Advocacy and policy engagement.
    • Evidence generation and policy analysis.
    • Equality for women, girls and Social Analysis and Action (SAA).
    • Monitoring, learning, and organizational development.
    • Strategic planning and stakeholder engagement.

These activities help organizations strengthen their skills and confidence to lead advocacy and engage with government and other stakeholders.

  2. Building Collective Action and Partnerships

The project brings local organizations together to identify shared concerns, learn from each other, and develop joint advocacy priorities and plans.

Through collective action, organizations can share their experiences, bring different perspectives, and work together to advocate for changes that benefit women and girls in their communities.

  3. Supporting Advocacy and Engagement

The project creates opportunities for local organizations to engage with decision-makers, local government authorities, and other stakeholders.

Organizations are supported to use evidence from their communities, develop advocacy messages, and take part in policy dialogue and other advocacy engagements on issues affecting women and girls.

  4. Promoting Equality for Women and Girls

Equality for women and girls is at the centre of the project. CARE Tanzania works with local organizations to support women’s and girls’ rights, promote youth leadership, and strengthen the inclusion of people with disabilities.

The project also supports approaches that create space for community members to raise their voices, challenge harmful social norms, and contribute to positive change in their communities.
