In the Southern Agricultural Growth Corridor of Tanzania (SAGCOT), women and youth face are affected by climate change — declining water resources in the Great Ruaha River ecosystem, unpredictable weather, and food insecurity. HROP is a bold six-year initiative that builds climate resilience, promotes gender-responsive climate-smart agriculture, and strengthens women’s leadership in sustainable food systems.

About the Project

The Her Resilience, Our Planet (HROP) project is a transformative climate resilience initiative addressing the interconnected challenges of climate change, food insecurity, environmental degradation, and gender inequality in Tanzania’s Southern Agricultural Growth Corridor (SAGCOT). Implemented in the Great Ruaha River (GRR) catchment — a critical ecosystem under stress from deforestation, water scarcity, and extreme weather — HROP empowers food-insecure communities, with a strong focus on women and youth.

The project builds on CARE’s long-standing work in the region (including the CARE-WWF Alliance) and integrates tools such as Farmer Field and Business Schools (FFBS), gender transformative dialogues, and nature-positive practices.

Key Objectives

HROP aims to achieve three main outcomes:

  1. Enhanced adoption of gender-responsive, climate-smart agriculture (CSA) and biodiversity-protective food systems solutions by vulnerable communities, especially women and youth.
  2. Increased access to gender-responsive, climate-smart, and nature-positive agricultural business development resources and services.
  3. Stronger leadership and participation of women and adolescent girls in shaping gender-responsive, climate- and nature-informed policies, strategies, plans, and budgets.

Overall goal: Improve climate resilience, livelihoods, food security, and ecosystem health while advancing gender equality.
