Anthony Mveyange is a Tanzanian development economist, scholar, and leader with over 15 years of regional and international work experience. He specializes in development economics research, evaluation, policy, training, evidence, and data analysis, insights, and governance. His areas of interest include inequality, poverty, health, education, agriculture, natural resources, international trade, economic growth, and development in Africa. He is highly regarded for his leadership skills in institutional oversight and governance, organizational strategy, strategic leadership, policy advocacy, partnerships, strategy implementation, fundraising, policy analysis, communication, decision-making, problem-solving, and growth-oriented initiatives. He has gained work and living experience in countries such as the United States, Denmark, Finland, Kenya, and Tanzania.
Currently serving as the Director of Programs at African and Population Health Research Center (APHRC) headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya with regional offices in Dakar, Senegal, Anthony is also a co-founder of the Network for Impact Evaluation Researchers in Africa (NIERA) based in Kenya. He has held various positions throughout his career, including a recent role as Director and Technical Advisor at Perigee Consulting Limited, Engagement Lead for Socializing Global Public Investments (GPI) in Africa at the Development Initiative, Executive Director at PASGR, and Regional Research and Learning Director at Trademark Africa in Kenya. He has also worked as a research economist at the World Bank Research Development Group in Washington, D.C., USA, and as an Assistant Lecturer at Tumaini University in Tanzania.
Anthony has consulted for organizations such as the World Bank Group, the United Nations University World Institute for Development Economics Research (UNU-WIDER), the African Economic Research Consortium (AERC), Porticus Africa, AMREF Health Africa, and Trademark Africa. He has overseen projects in several countries, including Burundi, Rwanda, South Sudan, Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Somaliland, Malawi, Zambia, Mozambique, South Africa, Namibia, Ghana, Ethiopia, Senegal, Nigeria, Cote d’Ivoire, and Canada. He has also advised the governments of Tanzania and Kenya. Over the years, Anthony has forged many strategic partnerships and collaborated with institutions such as the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), Overseas Development Institute (ODI), European Centre for Development and Policy Management (ECDPM), African Economic Research Consortium (AERC), Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC), and several universities, higher learning, and research institutions in Tanzania, Rwanda, Uganda, Senegal, Cameroon, Mozambique, Namibia, Burundi, South Africa, Kenya, Lesotho, Botswana, Ethiopia, Ghana, and Nigeria. Anthony serves on several boards, including Econews Africa and the Kimisitu Sacco Foundation in Kenya. He is also a member of the Foundation for Civil Society in Tanzania. Additionally, he represents Africa on the Board of Directors for Evidence for Governance and Politics (EGAP) and is a member of the Advisory Council at Harvard Business Review in the US. Previously, he was on the Strategic Advisory Group (SAG) of the African Cities Research Consortium (ACRC) at the University of Manchester in the UK.
Anthony is a fellow of the East Africa Social Science Translation Collaborative (EASST) and a member of the Economic Society of Tanzania (EST), the American Economic Association (AEA), the INCLUDE Knowledge Platform, the European Economic Association (EEA), Poverty Reduction, Equity, and Growth (PEGNet), and the African Program on Rethinking Development Economics (APORDE). He also contributes to Africa in Focus at the Africa Growth Initiative of the Brookings Institution. In 2019, Trademark Africa awarded him the CEO Merit Award for his contributions to knowledge, impact, and innovation. In 2020, he was selected as one of the 12 global experts by the World Manufacturing Forum (WMF) and made significant contributions to a White Paper on the future of global value chains. He frequently shares his expertise on media outlets such as the RFI, BBC, CGTN, Voice of America, and local broadcasting networks in Africa.
Anthony has received several scholarships from prestigious institutions in the United States, Sweden, the Netherlands, Denmark, the United Kingdom, and South Africa. He holds a Ph.D. in Economics, two master’s degrees in economics, a Post-Graduate Diploma in Poverty Analysis, and a bachelor’s degree in accounting and finance.
