What we do

We put women and girls in the center because we know that we cannot overcome poverty until all people have equal rights.

Women are a vital part of CARE's community-based efforts to improve access to inclusive education, involvement in decision making and expanding economic opportunity for all.

We believe that at poverty is caused by unequal power relations that result in inequitable distribution of resources and opportunities between women and men, between powerholders and marginalized communities and between countries.

Poverty cannot be overcome without addressing these underlying power imbalances. CARE contributes to lasting impact at scale in poverty eradication and social equality, in support of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). While all that we do is to support the achievement of ending poverty (SDG 1), women and girls’ empowerment (SDG 5) sits at the heart of our programmatic ambitions and radiates throughout our work. Women and girls’ empowerment is therefore central organizing principle. We cannot achieve economic independence resilient futures, right to health, right to food, water, and nutrition, or equal access to crisis preparedness and response assistance without addressing inequality faced by women and girls.
