Tanga Investment Forum

CARE International in Tanzania had a valuable opportunity to participate in the launch of Tanga Region investment guide prepared by the Economic Social Research Foundation (ESRF) with support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), from November 16th to 17th, 2023.  The guidebook will assist in the execution of the development pathway of the region and provide essential regional economic opportunities to stimulate business and enterprise growth.

Representing the Prime Minister Hon. Kassim Majaliwa during the forum, Hon. Prof. Kitila Mkumbo unveiled the Tanga Investment Guidebook, intended to enhance Tanga Region’s competitiveness in comparative strengths as well as reveal emerging economic potentials. Tea and cashew crops stand out as potential value chains for investment, under commercial agriculture opportunity which aligns with CARE’s ongoing projects supporting smallholder farmers in Mkinga and Korogwe Districts. This presents an opportunity for scaling up our activities in agriculture sector.

''Hon. Prof. Kitila Mkumbo; Minister President Office, Planning and Investment, addressed the public, urging regional offices to expedite decision-making processes and streamline bureaucratic hurdles. He emphasized the urgency of infrastructure development to establish an enabling environment for investment and economic growth. Additionally, he stressed the need for swift responses to issues that hinder business operations.''

The event comprised two simultaneous sections. Staff from CARE International in Tanzania, including the Program Director and Senior Program Manager, participated in indoor activities involving presentations on investment opportunities by all Tanga Regional Commissioner, panel discussions, and Q&A sessions across strategic sectors for sustainable investment in the Tanga region. Outdoor activities showcased various initiatives conducted by different stakeholder groups across the region. CARE International in Tanzania exhibited value-added products produced by farmers through our projects in the tea and cashew value chains.

This forum has established robust Public and Private Partnerships, fostering increased productivity in investments, employment creation, and a rise in per capita income and GDP. The government recognizes the pivotal role of both local and foreign private sectors and other strategic partners as drivers of growth, poverty reduction, and economic transformation. Furthermore, the Tanga region authorities have initiated support for women focusing on the fishing sector by providing startup capital and loans for fishing equipment.
