Edwin's Literacy Journey: USAID Kijana Nahodha

USAID Kijana Nahodha (Young Captain) Project offers Edwin and countless other Tanzanian youth a second chance to rebuild their literacy and pursue their dreams.

At just 15 years old, Edwin faced the tough reality of leaving school to support his single mother and six younger siblings. Juggling work in brick factories and farms, he put survival ahead of his education.

Yet, despite his hunger to learn, financial burdens kept him away from school. That was until February 2024, when his mother came across the USAID Kijana Nahodha project—an initiative offering accelerated learning to out-of-school youth. Initially hesitant, Edwin eventually joined and soon began to regain his confidence. With newfound literacy and numeracy skills, he transformed his life and reignited his dream of becoming a successful businessman.
