Press Release: CARE Receives Grant from Project Management Institute Educational Foundation to Empower Youth in Tanzania

CARE is thrilled to announce that it has received grant from the Project Management Institute Educational Foundation (PMIEF) to launch the “Leading and Learning with Project Management” initiative. This three-year project will equip 27,000 youth aged 15-19 in Tanzania with essential project management skills, fostering their economic, social, and personal development.

Project Overview

The “Leading and Learning with Project Management” initiative will integrate project management principles into CARE’s existing Youth Savings and Loan Associations (YSLAs) in Tanzania. This innovative approach will provide youth with practical experience in planning and executing projects, thereby enhancing their leadership, financial literacy, and life skills.

The project will incorporate project management training within the economic empowerment and financial literacy lessons of CARE’s YSLAs. Out-of-school youth will identify and pursue individual or group projects, such as income-generating activities or community service projects, applying project management principles to strengthen their planning and outcomes.

Addressing Unmet Needs

With over 50% of Tanzania’s population under 18, there is a critical need to support youth during their transition to adulthood. This project aims to provide the necessary structure and skills to help young people become independent and productive members of their communities.

Prudence Masako, CARE Tanzania Country Director, shares that,

“Agriculture employs 65% of Tanzania’s workforce, yet more than half of the population still lives in multidimensional poverty. Only 1.9% of the population aged 15 and above has attained a university education, leaving most small-scale producers without access to advanced skills. At CARE, we believe project management isn’t just a skill reserved for corporate boardrooms—it’s a powerful tool for small-scale producers, who are the backbone of Tanzania’s economy. This first-of-its-kind partnership with PMI in Tanzania aims to empower small-scale producers—who make up over 65% of the workforce—with essential project management skills. This initiative will bridge the skills gap, drive sustainable growth, and transform Tanzania’s agricultural sector and other sectors, leading to a significant shift in the country’s economic trajectory.”

Dr. Ashley Forsyth, Director, Social Impact Programs at PMIEF shares,

“At PMI we’re committed to training the next generation of project management professionals and entrepreneurs in Africa. In 2023, we empowered 2.7 million youth globally with project management skills, with 85,000 coming from sub-Saharan Africa. Thanks to partnerships like CARE, over the next three years we will impact over 750,000 youth in sub–Saharan Africa, ensuring aspiring leaders have the skills they need to lead and compete in a global society.”
